The Fabulist is a translation project of Uthis Haemamool’s 2015 novel of the Thai entitled จุติ, translated by palin, under soi literary, in collaboration with Juti publishing

Synopsis
An old woman’s immortal spirit takes on multiple lives as a tree, a naga, a gazelle, a rock and a human woman. A doctor suffers from a paralytic stroke and embarks on an individual quest for justice in his afterlife. An Isaan woman relives her Thai soap opera fantasy in an abusive marriage with a man who forced her to renounce her mother tongue. A ghost writer attempts to deal with the violent tragedy that befell onto his family by writing them into fiction. A young woman from the future struggles to break free from the identity shaped by her ancestral history.

Bound together by the district of Kaeng Khoi in Saraburi, Thailand, Rebirth is a novel about one family’s tale and intergenerational trauma told through five different narrative voices. A palimpsestic retelling of myths, folk tales, historical annals, beliefs and memory, the five voices act as the ‘seams’ and ‘gaps’ between the perpetual death and rebirth of stories shapeshifting through the passage of time, literary conventions and forms.

วิญญาณอมตะของหญิงแก่ที่ได้มาจุติในร่างของต้นไม้ พญานาค เนื้อทราย ก้อนหิน และมนุษย์ คุณหมอที่หมดสติจากโรคลมอัมพาตและออกตามหาความยุติธรรมอยู่ในโลกหลังความตาย หญิงสาวชาวอีสานที่ใช้ชีวิตอย่างเพ้อฝันตามแบบละครไทยที่นำไปสู่การทารุณกรรมจากสามีผู้บังคับให้เธอละทิ้งภาษาแม่ของตัวเอง นักเขียนผีผู้พยายามจะอยู่กับโศกนาฏกรรมที่เกิดขึ้นในครอบครัวด้วยการนำมาแต่งเป็นนิยาย และหญิงสาวจากอนาคตผู้พยายามดิ้นรนออกจากตัวตนที่ประวัติบรรพบุรุษของเธอได้ขีดเอาไว้

จุติ คือเรื่องราวแห่งบาดแผลของครอบครัวหนึ่งที่เล่าผ่านเสียงเล่าทั้งหมดห้าเสียงจากต่างช่วงวัย แต่ยึดโยงเข้าด้วยกันผ่านพื้นที่ทางประวัติศาสตร์และความทรงจำของอำเภอแก่งคอย จังหวัดสระบุรี ตำนาน เรื่องเล่าพื้นบ้าน บันทึกจดหมายเหตุ ความเชื่อและความทรงจำมากมายถูกเล่าขานอย่างทับซ้อนกันจากเสียงทั้งห้าที่เป็นเสมือน ‘รอยต่อ’ และ ‘ช่องว่าง’ ระหว่างการดับและเกิดใหม่ซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่าของเรื่องราวที่เปลี่ยนรูปร่างไปตามกาลเวลาและลีลาสกุลทางวรรณกรรม
